How it works
The data that proves a check is genuine, printed on the check.
As criminals find new ways to commit check fraud, tools like Secure Barcode Positive Pay and secure check printing make it easier to fight back.
- 1
Issue
Checks are printed from your existing accounting system through ChequeSeal or ChequeSuite.
- 2
Encrypt
Key check data is encoded into a secure barcode on the check at the source.
- 3
Scan
The check is scanned at deposit or clearing by CheckTeller or CheckPoint.
- 4
Validate
Encoded data is compared with the printed serial number, amount, date and payee.
- 5
Flag
Discrepancies are flagged as exceptions for review before funds are released.
Understanding Positive Pay
Three types of Positive Pay — and where they differ.
Check Positive Pay
Banks compare certain fields of the check to the issuer file, including serial number, amount and date.
Payee Positive Pay
Adds the payee name to the comparison. Particularly effective against altered checks.
Barcode Positive Pay
Next-generation Positive Pay: data is read from the encrypted barcode on the check itself.
While traditional Positive Pay is a powerful tool, it has clear flaws: the corporate client must send an issuer file and verify flagged transactions. Busy clients often delay or forget to send the file, or clear alerts without fully verifying them.
Traditional Positive Pay also does not detect fraud on personal and handwritten checks. Barcode Positive Pay delivers the check fraud prevention that Positive Pay has failed to provide for the past two decades.
